BUT they both have something in common!!
I'll give you one guess....
No, not the lush brown locks. Not the huge eyes either, although you're getting closer!
Yup, you guessed it! Eyelashes!!
Now, even though we can all agree that Mr. Snuffy is wicked cool, I think most of us would aspire to be more like Aishwarya than Snuffalupagus in this particular regard (and, I guess, most other regards as well). Both have crazy long eyelashes that make their eyes look huge and expressive (although I'm pretty sure Ash's eyelashes in this shot are probably fake, while Snuffy's are undoubtedly real, but that's besides the point). So why is it that in Ash's case, she looks drop dead gorgeous, while in Snuffy's case, he's more on the bashful side? (I'm looking for a little more than the obvious human/wooly mammoth dichotomy here).
That's it! The curl factor!!
Now I think most people out there are blessed with eyelashes that, with minimal mascara and coaxing, can achieve amazing curl, definition, and length. I, however, am blessed with the following type of eyelashes:
I think most can agree that in this case (and probably many other cases as well), I am more wooly mammoth than Bollywood superstar. But again, what with my Indian hair genes and all, I'm sure I'm not the only one born with exceptionally long, yet stick-straight lashes that refuse to bend to the will of any mascara or eyelash curler or combination of the two that have been used on them.
I'll confess, I had all but given up hope. I had gone through countless different types of mascara and eyelash curlers. I tried curling, then applying mascara, then curling again. I tried applying mascara, then curling, then applying mascara again. I rinsed and repeated. But alas, to no avail. Even for my wedding, Lotus's exceptional makeup artist skills combined with the expertise of the sales assistants at various makeup counters yielded no solutions. I was doomed to have long, completely unnoticeable eyelashes for the rest of my life.
Of course, I had heard about the heated eyelash curlers, and the trick of heating your eyelash curler with your blowdryer before curling. On my low days, I even toyed with the idea of trying them. But the thought of having any kind of heated implement coming that close to my eye always terrified me. I decided (and I believe this was a wise decision, what with my already balding eyebrows), that straight lashes were better than no lashes at all.
So I had accepted my fate, and was moving on with my life. Until I rediscovered a cosmetic that I had forgotten about since my teenage years.
Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara |
Clear mascara. The cheapest kind of mascara you can find. I used to use this stuff all the time back in middle school/high school, when I technically wasn't allowed to wear "real" makeup. It was one of those sneaky-sneaky things that Mom wouldn't notice. Of course, I wasn't allowed to use eyelash curlers back then either, so its full potential was never discovered. That is, until approximately two weeks ago, when I randomly decided to Google eyelash curling techniques (to see if I could share any wisdom with my other Snuffy-lashed friends out there), and I came across this amazing post on another blog:
http://www.mybeautybunny.com/curl-stubbornly-straight-eyelashes/
So the potential, my friends, is there. Especially if you use it with an eyelash curler and regular mascara... their powers combined... the possibilities are endless!!!!!!!!!
Okay, maybe not endless. But it makes a huge difference. The cool thing about clear mascara is that even though it doesn't do much on its own, it kind of acts like a hairspray/gel for your eyelashes, thus setting up the stage for curlers and mascara!
So.... before....
Annnddd.... after!!!
Not bad, eh? A little Bambi-esque, maybe, but a nice change. And no falsies required!! To do this, I applied the clear mascara as the post advised, combed it through to keep it from clumping, allowed it to dry for a few (3-4) minutes, then curled my lashes, and then applied my go-to black mascara (Too Faced Size Queen Mascara in Black - reviews to come) and combed them through again.
Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara
Pros:
- It's cheap!! The cheapest kind they have. $5.49 at CVS.
- It's a simple solution that doesn't involve any scary heated implements!
Cons:
- Just like a hair gel, it can get clumpy or flakey. It also might be a little harsher on your lashes than just using regular mascara, especially since you're using also an eyelash curler and applying two different kinds of mascara. I'd recommend combing through your lashes very gently when you use clear mascara, since once it dries the comb can snag and pull out lashes if you're not careful.
- This method doesn't exactly last forever, but it does hold up for the better part of the day. I did it this morning, and by now they're not quite rocking the curl they had before, but they've still got more lift than they normally would if I hadn't done anything to them.
