For the love of makeup...

The Innate Love of Makeup

Today's post is not about a particular makeup product.  I did, however, want to share some thoughts on why I think us ladies love makeup!  I have recently spending a lot of time with my niece, who just turned 6, and is one of the awesomeist little people in the world.  Despite her being on a strict "no-makeup allowed" ban, her fascination and absolute love for makeup has made me realize that us grown-up women who giggle over new eyeshadow are likely internally programmed to adore anything makeup or beauty-related from birth.  Here is a recent conversation we had while she was digging through my makeup drawers (yes I have more than one but they are small!):

Niece (holding up a tube of my Makeup Forever Full Cover Concealer in 10): What's this?
Me: It's concealer.
Niece (who starts opening the tube): What's concealer?
Me (batting her little hands away from the tube): It covers spots on your face
Niece: Can I try some???
Me: No.
Niece (pulling out my solid perfume): What's this??
Me: Perfume.
Niece: Can I try some???
Me (putting the perfume back):  No.
Niece (pulling out my Ulta Crayon Lipstick in Muse): What's this!!!
Me: Lipstick
Niece: Can I try some???
Me: No.
Niece:  Pleeeeeeeeeease?
Me: No.
Niece (holding it up to her lips): Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease??
Me: No.
Niece (holding it way too close to her lips): Just a dot?!?!
Me: No!

And she proceeds to put a dot on her brother's homework instead.  She just HAD to apply that lipstick SOMEWHERE.

Not only does she love looking through my stuff, she loves playing with my makeup brushes.  If I'm not around, and return to my bathroom with my makeup brushes splayed across the counter, I know she's been there already.  She will contently brush her face over and over again with them, and smile.

I let her put makeup on me one day, and when I told her she could, her face LIT UP.  Her face generally carries this glow when she watches me puts on makeup (with a lot of "What's that??"s).  But, she could barely contain her joy when I let her put powder and blush on me.  Mind you, she wanted to put on a LOT more me than I usually put on, so I had to control the application a bit!

It amazes me that a girl this young loves makeup as much as Jaz (short for Jasmine) and I do.  She has only been here for 6 years, isn't allowed to wear it, but still loves to pretend with it, sneak it on, or put it on others.  We have a little makeup artist in the works, people!  Gosh, I love her. :)
